The Wave Daily Lottery—How To Score A Permit For This Exclusive Hike

The Wave, located on the Arizona-Utah border, is a breathtaking sandstone formation that has become a must-see destination for hikers and photographers. Its undulating, vibrant patterns create a remarkable environment that is both unique and intriguing.

However, accessing this natural beauty isn’t as simple as just putting on your hiking boots and hitting the trail; it requires navigating a competitive lottery system designed to protect its fragile ecology. Stay tuned to the House of Highways for more exciting events like this.

The Wave Lottery Event - 2025

Status: Ongoing

Dates: March 1 to 30

Understanding The Permit System

To protect The Wave’s delicate habitat, the Bureau of Land Management (BLM) limits daily visitors to 64. These permits are allocated through two main lotteries:

Advanced Lottery: Four months before the event, 48 licenses (or 12 groups, whichever comes first) are distributed.

Daily Lottery: Distributes 16 permits (or four groups, whichever comes first) two days before the hike date.

Both lotteries are managed by Recreation.gov.

The Advanced Lottery—Planning Ahead

The Advanced Lottery is your best option if you're a diligent planner. This is how it works.

Application Window: Open for the entire month, four months before your planned hike. For example, if you want to trek in May, apply between January 1st and 31st.

Application Fee: There is a non-refundable fee of $9 per group.

Notification: Winners are contacted on the first of the month after the application deadline.

Confirmation: If selected, confirm your permit and pay a $7 recreation charge for each person and dog by the 15th of the month.

Keep in mind that demand is high. Therefore, obtaining a permit through the Advanced Lottery can be difficult.

The Daily Lottery—A Last-Minute Opportunity

For those who enjoy spontaneity or missed the Advanced Lottery, the Daily Lottery provides a second chance:

Geofence Requirement: To apply, you must be physically present within a geofenced area around Kanab Utah, or Page, Arizona.

Application Timing: Apply two days before your selected hiking date, between 6:00 AM and 6:00 PM (Mountain Time).

Application Method: Use the Recreation.gov mobile app on your smartphone; because desktop applications are not approved.

Fees: There is a non-refundable application fee of $9 per group. If chosen, an extra $7 per person or dog is required.

Notification: The winners are contacted at 7:15 PM (Mountain Time) on the day of the application.

Permit Pickup: Attend a mandatory safety training and pick up your permit by 8:30 AM (local time) the next day in Kanab, Utah, or Arizona.

Remember, the Daily Lottery is extremely competitive, with odds of less than 2% during peak seasons.

Tips To Increase Your Chances

Flexible Dates: Apply for several dates to maximize your chances.

Weekday Applications: Weekdays often have fewer applications, which increases your chances.

Off-Peak Seasons: Consider organizing your hike during winter, when competition is minimal.

Preparing For The Hike

Securing a permit is only the first step. The Wave is located in a remote area with no established trails, so planning is vital.

Navigation Skills: Familiarize yourself with GPS and map reading.

Physical Fitness And Mental Awareness: The hike is hard, covering 6.4 miles over difficult terrain.

Weather Awareness: Check the forecast and avoid hiking during extreme.

Bottom Line

The Wave is a unique and gratifying adventure that involves careful planning and a touch of luck.

Whether you choose the Advanced or Daily Lottery, understanding the process and being properly prepared will increase your chances of obtaining a permit and enjoying this natural wonder safely.
